The fruit called Gambooge


This fruit is called Gambooge in Southeast Asian countries. They are called as such because people have been accustomed to calling it GummiGuta. It is actually called brindle berry in Western countries and in some Southeast Asian countries, they call it Malabar tamarind or Assam, and yields a yellowish coloured, pumpkin shaped fruit. Although this fruit may look simple, the pumpkin shaped rind can be dried and set aside for extraction and used as a souring agent for food and other pickled recipes, thus, wrongly calling it the “Malabar tamarind”, which is actually a fruit of different species.

Gambooge actually have a lot of uses and most of them are for culinary purposes. Garcinia cambogia is mainly used as a souring agent for most Southern foods because of the fruit’s acidic properties. The fruit is very popular in Ceylon where Colombo’s famous “cured fish” is actually made curing the fish with Gambooge. It is also used in Ayurvedic medicine as a sour counterpart of salty foods combination. Some scientists even made it a point that Gambooge can be used to lose weight. As far as the recent researches have shown, a Garcinia Cambogia extract is shown to have the propensity to burn fats.
